The brief
Standing as a beacon of Rotterdam’s resilience, progress, and unity since the 1960s, the Euromast is now home to two new immersive experiences that invite visitors into the story of the city itself.
As the first stop of the full visitor journey, these installations set the stage before guests ascend the tower to take in the real view from above. Blending film, sound, interactivity, and spatial design, they offer a multisensory introduction to Rotterdam’s identity.
Woodwork was commissioned to concept, design, produce, and direct the films for both spaces. Building on the narrative direction from NorthernLight, we shaped two distinct worlds: one rooted in history, the other alive with celebration. Each designed to draw visitors into a dynamic, sensory experience.
Our role
We led the full creative development and production of both immersive films, from historical research and script development to concept, creative direction, art direction, design, and animation.
In close collaboration with NorthernLight, we defined the visual language, rhythm, and atmosphere for each space, ensuring every element connected storytelling with spatial experience.
We maintained overall creative alignment throughout the project, partnering with YIPP on interactivity, Bruns on spatial elements, AtaTech for AV integration, and THNDR for the audio design and mix.
The result
What once began as a straightforward ascent to the top now starts with two immersive rooms that introduce visitors to the story of Rotterdam. Located at the base of the tower, they welcome guests with a cinematic and sensory prelude that sets the scene for what’s to come. Each installation combines film, sound, and spatial design into a cohesive experience that helps visitors connect with Rotterdam’s past and present.
Before taking the lift to the top, visitors first step into an environment that brings the city’s history and spirit to life. Together, the installations add depth and continuity to the overall journey, turning a visit into a more layered and memorable experience.
Through these two installations, we helped the Euromast transform its visitor journey, from a viewing experience into a story-driven encounter with the city.

This immersive journey reveals the origin story of Rotterdam, a flight over the early settlements on the marshy shorelands of the river Rotte, through the rising waters, to the building of the dam that created dry land and marked the beginning of a permanent settlement that would one day grow into the city. Combining smooth CGI motion design, textural storytelling, and a powerful spatial audio score, we crafted a historically grounded film that is both informative and engaging, evoking the constant tension between water and land. Visitors are invited to step into the story themselves: by moving through the space, they help dry the land, mirroring the collective effort that shaped Rotterdam.
