Risen from the Water
Immersive Experience 1 - The Birth of Rotterdam. This immersive journey reveals the origin story of Rotterdam, a flight over the early settlements on the marshy shorelands of the river Rotte, through the rising waters, to the building of the dam that created dry land and marked the beginning of a permanent settlement that would one day grow into the city. Combining smooth CGI motion design, textural storytelling, and a powerful spatial audio score, we crafted a historically grounded film that is both informative and engaging, evoking the constant tension between water and land. Visitors are invited to step into the story themselves: by moving through the space, they help dry the land, mirroring the collective effort that shaped Rotterdam.

The flight begins in the 1960s, when the Euromast was first constructed. Viewers witness its unique method of assembly — the “crow’s nest” gradually pushed upwards into place. As a ship sails past, a connection is made to the city’s maritime roots, with the tower’s form inspired by the mast of a ship. As the camera ascends, present-day Rotterdam unfolds in full colour, revealing the landmarks that define its skyline. The journey culminates in a burst of light and motion, with cheerful illustrated characters waving visitors on to the next stage of their experience.
